Data Center Spending Rises to $1.8 Trillion by 2050 in a Surge of Artificial Intelligence Investment
Global spending on data centers is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by the end of this decade as the sector evolves from digital infrastructure into a strategic asset sought after by nations and corporations alike.
The world may invest up to $31.6 trillion in data centers by 2050, marking one of the largest investment waves tied to artificial intelligence. PricewaterhouseCoopers reported that based on modeling by Oxford Economics covering 46 countries and regions, annual spending will climb from approximately $80 billion in 2026 to $1.1 trillion by 2030. The final projected figure for 2050 stands at $1.8 trillion. This growth extends beyond building facilities; accelerating compute needs require repeated updates to servers, chips, and equipment alongside increased power supply and cooling capabilities. Unlike previous infrastructure cycles such as railroads or electricity where spending often declines after completion, current data center investment remains continuous due to ongoing hardware demands.
