Chinese markets moved cautiously on Monday. The renminbi reached a new high of 3.5 years against the U.S. dollar, despite clear signals from China's central bank to slow this appreciation. At noon during the trading session, the Shanghai Composite Index fell by 0.2 percent to 3920.70 points. Conversely, the CSI 300 leading stocks index rose by 0.2 percent. Technology holdings received significant support; the ChiNext index for start-up companies gained 2.6 percent. The STAR 50 Shanghai technology-focused index also climbed 1.6 percent. The semiconductor sector advanced by 2.6 percent. The CSI 5G Communications Index jumped roughly 5 percent, driven largely by a strong rise in Zhongji Innolight shares of 8.1 percent. Many Chinese firms followed these gains. Meanwhile, banking and insurance stocks faced downward pressure.
