Fitch upgrades Portugal's sovereign rating to A+, strongest in 15 years

Fitch Ratings has raised Portugal's credit rating to A+ from A, marking the highest standing since 2010. The move follows similar affirmations from S&P and DBRS.

Fitch Ratings announced it upgraded Portugal's sovereign debt rating from A to A+ with a stable outlook. This marks the highest credit rating the country has held in 15 years. Fitch cited strengthened public finances as the primary driver, noting a projected decline in public debt and budget balances that exceed those of comparable nations. The agency emphasized Portugal's political commitment to fiscal prudence. Governance indicators also play a role, reflecting membership benefits within the European Union and the euro area. While the rating reflects these strengths, Fitch acknowledged offsetting factors including high accumulated public and external debt levels. Portuguese official AICEP stated that all financial ratings agencies now assign Portugal an A rating. Standard & Poor's confirmed its sovereign credit ratings at A+/A-1 in August with a positive outlook. DBRS reaffirmed the Republic of Portugal's status as A (high) in July 2025.
