IMF Forecasts 3% Global Growth in 2026 Amid High Risks

The International Monetary Fund expects the global economy to grow by approximately 3 percent in 2026, though it warns that risks remain elevated due to ongoing energy shocks and mounting debt.

In Washington, a representative for the International Monetary Fund stated that the global economy has remained resilient despite six months of war in the Middle East. Despite fears regarding an energy shock caused by conflict, IMF officials noted that oil and gas reserves allowed many nations to cope with rising costs. The agency predicted global economic output would still expand by about 3 percent in 2026. This figure represents a slowdown compared to average growth seen in 2024 and 2025. An official attributed this lower projection to stalling disinflation efforts following the 2022 cost-of-living crisis and rising global inflationary expectations. However, the representative emphasized these expectations remain well-anchored over the longer run. The IMF cautioned that uncertainty continues to be high while debt pressures mount globally.
