JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon meets UK Chancellor John Healey before Oct. 28 budget

Bankers are pressuring the British government to ease costs and increase defense spending ahead of Chancellor John Healey's upcoming fiscal plan.

Jamie Dimon, chairman and chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase & Co., met with UK Chancellor John Healey at Downing Street on Wednesday. Dimon held separate discussions with Prime Minister Andy Burnham as well. The meetings occur before Healey presents his first autumn budget on October 28. This budget will outline the new administration's fiscal strategies. Financial experts report that bankers are increasing pressure on the British leadership regarding specific policy changes. A proposed windfall tax for banks and oil companies is among the measures currently under discussion. Additionally, reducing living costs, transferring political authority to local governments, and increasing military expenditure were identified as remaining priorities by the officials involved. The government currently faces significant challenges balancing its books due to persistent inflation, high borrowing rates, and slow economic growth.
