Sensex closes at 74,782 after recovering 622 points from morning lows
Indian benchmark indices rebounded significantly in the afternoon despite a sharp intraday drop triggered by rising oil prices and geopolitical concerns.
Indian equity markets closed on Friday with mixed results as major indices recovered most of their morning losses. The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex finished at 74,782, having dropped 740 points early before climbing back 622 points. The NSE Nifty 50 ended near 23,398, rebounding 167 points after falling below 23,250 mid-morning. While individual indices showed recovery, the overall market remained in the red; Sensex dropped 121 points and Nifty lost 80 points from open levels.
Rising crude oil prices and fears of a higher global interest-rate environment weighed on investor sentiment, extending a recent corrective trend. Sectoral performance varied widely. HDFC Bank shares, which hit a 52-week low after falling nearly 2%, gained approximately 2% to lead gains. Conversely, Tata Steel declined 2%, and Reliance Industries fell more than 1%. Metal and Realty sectors lagged significantly, with Nifty Metal dropping 0.65% and Nifty Realty closing down over 2%. The India VIX rose 4% to 12.27, reflecting heightened volatility.
