OpenAI calls for mandatory safety rules on US AI systems

OpenAI is urging the US to adopt compulsory safety standards, a shift from its previous opposition to regulation. The company insists advanced models require new policies that no single entity can manage alone.

OpenAI requested that the United States establish mandatory safety requirements for its most powerful artificial intelligence systems. This position marks a significant change for the organization, which had previously opposed tightening regulatory restrictions on the sector. Chris Leihan, Global Affairs Director at OpenAI, stated in an official statement that national compulsory rules must be based on the capabilities of advanced AI models. He added that AI has entered a new phase regarding its power, necessitating a corresponding evolution in organized policies. Leihan emphasized that no individual company, industry, or government can address this challenge independently. The organization expressed a desire for a federal framework featuring uniform safety testing standards and independent evaluations for the most advanced models. Additionally, it called for stricter cybersecurity requirements and mandatory reporting of serious safety incidents.
