US markets rise as Fed Governor Christopher Waller hints at halting rate hikes
Wall Street delivered its best performance in a month, with the Nasdaq jumping 1.4%, after Fed Governor Christopher Waller suggested stopping rate increases if progress continues toward inflation goals.
On Friday, September 4, US stock markets recorded significant gains following statements from Federal Reserve official Christopher Waller. The Dow Jones finished at 53,686, up 1.18 percent, while the S&P 500 closed at 7,748, gaining 1.06 percent. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.40 percent to reach 26,584, marking its strongest session in approximately a month. Other major indices also advanced, with the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.32 percent and the UK FTSE rising 0.70 percent. Fed Governor Waller stated that if continued progress is achieved toward the 2 percent inflation target, he is willing to support holding the policy rate at its current level. However, he noted that a rate hike would be considered if inflation returns rapidly. Markets reacted positively to this comment after bond yields had climbed significantly earlier in the week.
