UK sells £4.25 billion of 30-year gilts at record yield of 5.8168%

The UK sold a record £4.25 billion in government bonds at a historic high yield, signaling rising borrowing costs despite strong investor demand for the debt.

Britain sold £4.25 billion of 30-year gilt bonds on Tuesday at a yield of 5.8168%. This sale represented the highest recorded yield for this instrument since 1998, surpassing a previous record set in May of that year. The specific bond, known as the 5.375% 2056 gilt, was issued through a syndication. Strong demand persisted during the auction, with total orders exceeding £87 billion. The rise in borrowing costs highlights fiscal pressures facing the government ahead of the upcoming October Budget. Finance Minister John Healey faces challenges managing these elevated expenses. Britain currently holds the second-highest long-term borrowing cost among major advanced economies, trailing only Australia. Global context includes a sharp rise in yields driven by inflation concerns and geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Iran.
