UK Petrol Prices Rise to Highest Level Since the Iran War Started
Petrol prices in the UK have reached their maximum value since the conflict began, with diesel trailing below its 2019 peak.
Petrol prices in the UK hit their highest level since the war in Iran started, according to the RAC. The average cost stood at 163.6p a litre recently, marking an increase from a low of 150.59p per litre recorded in early July. Diesel costs reached 184.99p a litre, though this remains under the 191.54p peak recorded on April 15. RAC policy head Simon Williams stated that drivers will almost certainly pay noticeably more at pumps over the coming weeks due to elevated oil prices. Transport delays from wholesale markets mean price shifts appear at the pump after about two weeks. While prices have risen, they remain below summer 2022 levels of 191.5p for petrol and 199p for diesel following the invasion of Ukraine. Fuel retailers denied accusations of gouging during the conflict. The UK official markets regulator confirmed it found no evidence of stations actively adjusting strategies to exploit the crisis. A government scheme allows drivers to compare station costs across the country. AA policy head Luke Bosdet expressed surprise at the initial speed of price drops and attributed this to the comparison tool.
