Sugar prices surged 21.5% in August, outpacing the S&P 500 on a year-to-date basis

Global sugar futures jumped significantly in August due to weather damage and production concerns, currently trailing the performance of major stock markets by a wide margin.

Sugar prices rose sharply last month. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported that global commodity prices increased in August, with sugar leading the surge. Prices climbed 21.5% during August, which represented the largest monthly gain since October 2010. In 2026, sugar has appreciated approximately 20%, compared to a 13% rise for the S&P 500 index over the same period. The United Nations organization attributed these price increases to supply concerns including reduced sugar beet yields in Europe caused by heat waves and lower production prospects in Brazil and Asia due to El Niño conditions. Additionally, India announced plans to import raw sugar duty-free. William Osnato from Barchart noted that damage to European sugar beet crops during recent heatwaves was a primary driver for the immediate market reaction.
