Reserve Bank highlights rising fuel costs driving Australia's EV sales boom

High petrol prices near $2 per litre are pushing households toward electric vehicles, contributing to a stronger economy amid ongoing inflation.

Australians are increasingly switching to electric and hybrid vehicles as fuel costs remain high. Petrol prices fell from a peak of about $2.50 a litre earlier this year but hovered around $2 after the government ended its fuel excise discount in August. This keeps Australian petrol roughly 20 cents per litre more expensive than the average price in major cities during 2025. Fuel expenses account for about 3 per cent of household spending, impacting households and businesses across transport, farming, and aviation sectors. Inflation remains a key challenge with prices growing 3.5 per cent in the 12 months to July. Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock noted that petrol prices are highly visible compared to other costs. This price pressure has accelerated sales of electric vehicles as consumers seek savings. The shift represents a significant economic trend driven by household budget constraints rather than technological adoption alone.
