The Japanese government has estimated its total fiscal spending for the 2027 fiscal year at ¥143.1 trillion, a level approaching pandemic-era levels.
Japan is facing three simultaneous economic challenges as the country prepares for increased government expenditure. Government budget requests for the 2027 fiscal year are projected to reach ¥143.1 trillion (approximately $917.8 billion), according to the Ministry of Finance. This figure includes spending from both the main and supplementary budgets. The proposed amount is nearing the peak levels Japan experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. This request exceeds a previous total approved by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's administration, which amounted to ¥140.61 trillion for the first year of his tenure. That earlier period included a supplementary budget of ¥18.3 trillion for the same year.
