Argentina proposes sanctions on oil companies drilling in Malvinas

President Javier Milei declared that Argentina will impose sanctions on oil companies conducting exploration and production activities in the Malvinas (Falkland Islands). The statement occurred during a televised national address on Thursday. Milei characterized potential drilling as an urgent threat to Argentine sovereignty, noting the country lost the territory in war to the UK forty-four years ago. He stated that wind of change favored Argentina's claim.

Milei is an ally of President Donald Trump, who recently indicated he was reconsidering the United States' neutral position regarding the archipelago. Milei announced a new bill is being sent to Congress to strengthen these responses.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband reaffirmed London's unshakeable stance on Friday. He stated on X that the islands are British and will remain so, citing overwhelming local support for continued British control since the UK seized the territory in 1833.
