Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calls for AI development slowdown and third-party monitoring
AI industry leaders including Sam Altman and Elon Musk support Anthropic's proposal to slow model development. Market analysts expect minor short-term stock pressure on chipmakers but no long-term damage.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, announced a plan to slow the development pace of advanced artificial intelligence models and implement stricter monitoring protocols. In an essay titled We Must Pace the Frontier published on Saturday, Amodei argued that risks associated with current technology are serious and required immediate attention. He proposed a three-point strategy involving independent evaluation of models during development, industry-wide regulation, and global oversight measures. Two competitors expressed agreement with his approach. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, publicly stated they support the initiative for AI safety. Concerns among the industry have intensified recently. Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher formerly employed by Anthropic, warned to Laura Kuenssberg that uncontrolled progress poses a high risk of human extinction within the next two years. While internal and external fears are palpable among practitioners, market reactions remain measured. Investors in semiconductor manufacturers and supply chains anticipate near-term volatility due to potential reductions in compute spending. Gary Tan, portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments in Singapore, noted that current demand for computing infrastructure still exceeds supply. Consequently, analysts view the proposed slowdown as likely causing only temporary earnings pressure rather than derailing long-term industry growth.
