86% of UK gambling sites accused of GDPR breaches

A study found that nearly nine out of ten licensed British betting websites are flouting data protection rules regarding cookie banners and customer tracking.

A recent analysis indicates that 86% of licensed British gambling websites are not complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Researchers at Swansea University's GREAT Centre tested 624 sites and discovered that nearly a quarter, or 24%, did not offer customers the ability to turn off tracking software. This lack of control allows advertisers to follow users across the web for targeted marketing. Major operators such as Hollywood Bets, which sponsors Brentford FC, and Admiral Casino were among those lacking this option. Britain's Information Commissioner's Office has already enforced compliance on 95% of the top 1,000 websites through a multi-year project. The study highlights a significant gap between national regulatory success for general websites and the specific industry's performance on privacy standards.
