At the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi on September 12, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined a strategic plan to dominate the region's technological landscape within the bloc. Xi stated China will pioneer the creation of a BRICS open-source AI community dedicated to developing and applying large language models. Additionally, the nation pledged to organize AI seminars, training courses, and build an open AI ecosystem for member states. The proposal also includes establishing a BRICS digital ecosystem cloud platform to facilitate technological exchange and industrial alignment. These initiatives aim to support a broader youth exchange program for scientific innovation. While the AI sector is currently experiencing rapid growth with frequent model releases, Xi did not directly address ongoing global debates regarding AI safety concerns raised by industry researchers. The summit coincided with India assuming leadership in 2026 and China taking over in 2027.
