HKEX CEO cites mainland Chinese firms' growing interest in listing on Hong Kong bourse

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing's boss highlights how the city serves as a bridge for tech startups connecting with global capital.

Bonnie Chan Yiting, chief executive of the Hong Kong stock exchange, stated that mainland Chinese companies are increasingly choosing Hong Kong for international development. She noted at the HKEX China Conference in Shanghai on Tuesday that these firms seek financing support and connections with global investors and partners to accelerate overseas expansion. The comments followed a period of significant activity in the mainland's A-share market, where tech champions like ChangXin Memory Technologies attracted voracious investor appetite. However, mainland stock exchanges remain largely inaccessible to foreign investors due to capital controls, restricting access to only qualified institutional investors through specific schemes. In contrast, Hong Kong traders can access Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges via the Stock Connect programme, although this scheme involves an investment quota system.
