$6 Billion: The Treasury Department expands single-operation bond buybacks to historic levels

The U.S. Treasury announced a major increase in its debt buyback program, raising the maximum amount for a single operation from $4 billion to $6 billion amid historically high yields.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury revealed it will purchase up to $6 billion in longer-dated government debt within a single operation this Thursday. The Fiscal Service Bureau announced the deal targets specific securities, including 10-year notes maturing in February 2037 and 20-year bonds due in August 2046. This action follows Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's earlier decision to raise minimum buyback thresholds from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, an increase intended to stabilize the market. Current yields on long-term U.S. debt have reached new highs since 2023, creating pressure that officials aim to relieve through these transactions scheduled between 1:40 p.m. and 2 p.m. ET.
