FREEE Recycle wins €29.7 million Dutch grant for Nigeria's first aerosol recycling plant
Nigerian firm FREEE Recycle secured a major grant under the Netherlands DHI Programme to establish the country's inaugural specialized aerosol can recycling facility.
FREEE Recycle Limited, a Nigerian waste recycling and manufacturing company, secured grant funding from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. The award falls under the RVO's DHI Programme and will fund the feasibility phase of the FREEE Recycle-DeSpray Environmental Services Aerosol Can Recycling Project. This partnership involves FREEE Recycle and DeSpray B.V., a Netherlands-based entity. The project is anchored at FREEE Recycle's Integrated Recycling and Manufacturing Facility in Ibadan, Oyo State. This location currently processes end-of-life tyres, PET bottles, and glass into reusable materials. The initiative will assess technical, financial, legal, and operational requirements for deploying DeSpray's aerosol recycling technology in Nigeria. Ifedolapo Runsewe, managing director of FREEE Recycle, stated the project addresses hazardous waste management gaps while supporting Nigeria's circular economy. He noted the integration aims to turn neglected hazardous waste into valuable industrial raw materials and clean energy. The company supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
