New estimates suggest Social Security COLA for 2027 could reach 3.5%

Government inflation data implies the upcoming cost-of-living adjustment might be 3.5% to 3.6%, a figure not seen since 2024.

The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment scheduled for January 2027 is expected to range between 3.5% and 3.6% based on fresh government inflation calculations. This potential rate would mark the largest annual increase in three years. In the previous year, approximately 75 million beneficiaries received a 2.8% boost to their benefits.

Mary Johnson, an independent policy analyst specializing in Social Security and Medicare, noted that this projection incorporates recent consumer price index figures released earlier this month. Her initial estimate from August put the rate at 3.4%, but the latest data has shifted the figure higher. Johnson indicated that volatile oil prices could influence the final determination of the adjustment.

While the Senior Citizens League is projecting a similar 3.5% increase, analysts continue to monitor how energy markets affect broader inflation trends. The upcoming adjustment will impact millions of retirees and dependents whose income relies on these federal benefits.
