UK approved Jackdaw gas field to supply up to 6% of peak demand, approval expected by mid-September
The UK government plans to authorize the Jackdaw gas project soon, though a Scottish court previously ruled the initial consent invalid due to incomplete climate impact assessments.
Government and industry sources indicate that approval for the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea will likely be granted before September's middle of the month. The project lies off the coast of Aberdeen. It is owned by Adura, a joint venture involving energy companies. The UK former Conservative government approved the site in 2022, but a legal ruling from the Court of Session in Edinburgh halted that process last year. Scottish judges determined the original consent was unlawful because climate impacts were not fully considered. Authorities released updated estimates for public consultation in July. Jackdaw's owners state the facility could supply up to 6% of the UK's demand at peak production times. Environmental campaigners argue the field will only provide 2%. Opposition legal challenges began after the initial 2022 approval and continued following the Rosebank oil field decision in 2023. The Jackdaw platform and drilling rig are located east of Aberdeen.
