Ugandan officials attend Ghana's Petroleum Commission board meeting in Accra to study oil regulation
Uganda and Ghana are strengthening regulatory cooperation on petroleum as Uganda prepares for its first oil production phase, with officials exchanging expertise on upstream governance and local content.
The Board of Directors of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) recently held a peer-learning engagement in Accra with Ghana's Petroleum Commission. PAU board member Innocent Kihika stated that Uganda aims to learn from Ghana regarding regulatory systems ahead of its own first oil production. The Ghanaian commission shared insights on legal frameworks, institutional arrangements, and health, safety, and environmental management. Both nations discussed challenges in managing petroleum resources and local content development. Ghana is currently exploring onshore oil opportunities in the Voltaian Basin. Chairman Ernest Thompson of the Ghana Petroleum Commission Board noted specific interest in the exchange. This interaction focuses on deepening cooperation regarding upstream operations rather than immediate production agreements.
