Reserve Bank of India Explores Tokenising Gold on Digital Platform

The Reserve Bank of India is investigating gold tokenisation as a potential asset class for its Unified Markets Interface, following earlier tests with certificates of deposit and commercial paper.

P. Vasudevan, Executive Director at the Reserve Bank of India, confirmed during the Global Fintech Fest 2026 that regulators are currently exploring how to tokenize gold. The Reserve Bank of India had already begun experimenting with tokenised financial-market instruments through its Unified Markets Interface platform, which allows settlement using wholesale central bank digital currency. Earlier pilots involved certificates of deposit and commercial paper. Vasudevan stated that challenges exist in current modes of transaction, suggesting tokenisation could fulfill these requirements. He indicated the goal is to expand the ecosystem by adding more asset classes beyond financial instruments currently on the platform. While gold is a specific area under review, the Reserve Bank of India is also examining deposits and corporate bonds as potential additions.
