Oil prices breach $100 per barrel as Iran conflict enters seventh month

US equity futures traded cautiously following a historic oil price milestone. Market participants now face inflation data releases alongside escalating regional tensions involving Iran.

Oil spot prices exceeded $100 per barrel, marking the first time since July this year reached that threshold. This surge follows escalating conflict in the Middle East and concerns regarding the direct impact on energy costs and global inflation. Trading behavior remained cautious despite the price move. Investors found it difficult to ignore the implications of the seventh month of war between Iran and its adversaries. There are fears of regional expansion which could further strain markets. US equity index futures traded with relative stability on Wednesday. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has reinforced his focus on curbing inflation ahead of next week's upcoming meeting where rate hike prospects were discussed. According to the CME FedWatch tool, market pricing currently assigns a 60.4 percent probability to the Fed increasing rates by 25 basis points at their next scheduled convening.
