Kenya's KenGen profit falls to Sh10.35bn as finance income drops
Kenya Electricity Generating Company recorded a net profit decrease for the fiscal year ending June 2026, driven primarily by lower finance income despite record electricity demand.
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) reported a decline in its net profit to Sh10.35 billion for the financial year ended June 30, 2026. This figure represents a decrease from Sh10.48 billion recorded in the prior year. KenGen attributed this drop to reduced finance income, which fell from Sh4.1 billion to Sh2.9 billion during the period. Conversely, the company managed its balance sheet by reducing total borrowings by Sh12.2 billion to a level of Sh97.1 billion. Finance costs were also lowered by 12.1 percent to Sh2 billion through capital and debt management measures. CEO Peter Njenga highlighted that national peak demand hit a record 2,549 megawatts on July 15, 2026, reaching 8,975 gigawatt hours supplied to the grid by year-end. More than 90 percent of this dispatch originated from renewable sources such as geothermal and hydro power.
