Hong Kong launches gold clearing system to rival New York and London

Hong Kong announced a new central clearing system for gold in July, aiming to become a global trading hub comparable to major international centers.

Officials in Hong Kong launched a central clearing and settlement system for gold in early July. The city also established a delivery connection with the Shanghai Gold Exchange. These moves aim to position Hong Kong as a global gold trading hub alongside New York and London. Stephen Law Cheuk-kin, president of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, stated that Hong Kong acts as a superconnector between China's domestic market and international bullion markets. He noted that mainland China is a major consumer, importer, and producer of gold. Hong Kong supplies international capital, global banks, insurers, commodity traders, sophisticated legal services, and multi-currency funding capabilities. The initiative follows skepticism from the past two years when officials set this goal. Geopolitical tensions involving Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the US-Israel war on Iran launched in February have increased interest in gold as a hedge.
