NSE Waived Rs 5 Lakh Membership Fee for Zerodha During IPO Launch Push

Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath highlighted the exchange's historic support, noting NSE waived a membership fee of Rs 5 lakh when the firm lacked funds to build a platform.

National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) moved closer to launching its initial public offering, reigniting discussions about the institution's future. Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath shared that the exchange provided critical support in 2010 by offering a free trading platform via NSE NOW. At that time, Zerodha lacked capital to construct its own infrastructure. NSE officials reportedly waived a membership fee of Rs 5 lakh for the brokerage. Kamath stated the company's existence is directly tied to this assistance. He noted Zerodha considered entering the brokerage business partly because brokers could offer clients access to NSE NOW. The company recalled that initial inquiries in Chennai received a welcoming response from exchange staff.
