OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon claims AI will kill humanity within a decade

Jacob Coxon, a former OpenAI and Anthropic employee, warned that artificial intelligence systems could destroy humanity in over 10% of cases within the next ten years.

Tech executives gathered at the Goldman Sachs conference in San Francisco to discuss investment returns while addressing warnings from AI safety researchers. Jacob Coxon, who worked at OpenAI before joining Anthropic and is now 27, posted on social media stating that developers building artificial intelligence believe the technology can destroy humanity. He argued these are superhuman systems capable of hacking everything and that people are gambling with their lives. Coxon described his posts as not being marketing material. Another current employee at Anthropic, Evan Hubinger, echoed similar fears, posting a statement that they earnestly believe AI could kill all humans with the same probability within a decade. While Coxon's warnings were explicit about the threat level, some Silicon Valley executives and investors have reacted with skepticism to these claims. The industry is currently preparing for potential record-breaking initial public offerings by Anthropic and OpenAI.
