Sweden commits €630 million to acquire ten Lockheed Martin HIMARS systems
The Swedish Ministry of Defence finalized a €630 million contract to buy ten High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems from Lockheed Martin, with initial deliveries set for 2027.
The Swedish Ministry of Defence confirmed on Monday that its armed forces will procure the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System from Lockheed Martin in a deal valued at almost €630 million. The agreement covers ten systems and ammunition, funded through the military's regular investment plan. First deliveries are expected in 2027 as part of the country's total defence bill for 2025 to 2030.
Rocket artillery reaches considerably further than conventional guns and is designed for precision strikes at distance. It complements Sweden's existing Archer artillery and grenade launchers rather than replacing them, allowing forces to cover far larger areas. The systems are compatible with those used by NATO allies.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson signed the procurement alongside Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen. They also issued a joint declaration covering cooperation and coordination on rocket artillery, noting that Sweden fills a gap in its military capabilities.
