X Nigeria introduces original content rewards replacing revenue sharing

Starting September 8, X launched a new creator programme prioritizing original material over simple engagement to test the Nigerian creator economy.

X rolled out its Original Content Rewards programme on September 8, marking a replacement for the previous Creator Revenue Sharing system. The new framework calculates earnings based on qualified impressions from X Premium users who view original content specifically on the Home Timeline. Under the prior arrangement, activity surrounding a post could generate income, which encouraged controversy and engagement farming. Consequently, the shift emphasizes qualifying posts, videos, images, articles, and commentary while excluding substantially copied or automated material. For Nigerian creators, this distinction is significant because X serves as a primary venue for public commentary across politics, business, football, entertainment, and breaking news. Much of the current ecosystem relies on reaction, quoting, reposting, and moving to the next controversy quickly. The new rules make possessing original contribution more valuable. This change should theoretically benefit creators whose work depends on expertise rather than simply speed.
